the REACH Regulation

It regulates communication, hazard information and the safe use of chemicals throughout the supply chain in the European Union. Furthermore, it legislates on the authorization of substances of particular concern and may place restrictions on the manufacture, placing on the market or use of a substance of chemical origin.

Stockholm Convention

It is an international agreement that regulates the treatment of toxic substances globally. It aims to protect human health and the environment from Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). As of 2021 30 POPs are regulated under the Convention. For example, parties that have ratified the Stockholm Convention aim to eliminate the use of PCBs by 2025 and to achieve environmentally sound management of their wastes by 2028.

Basel Convention

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal deals with hazardous waste materials throughout their life cycle, from production and transport to end use and disposal.

The Rotterdam Convention

It promotes international efforts to protect human health and the environment and allows countries to decide whether they want to import hazardous chemicals and pesticides covered by the convention.

Minamata Convention on Mercury

Its objective is to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds.

Paris Agreement for climate change

Establishes measures for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (Montreal Protocol)

Aims to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects resulting from the modification of the ozone layer.

Geneva Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution

Its objective is to limit and gradually reduce air pollution in the signatory countries by developing policies and strategies to combat the release of air pollutants.
