New Tools and Methodologies
One of the aims of the STRIKE project is to develop practical tools and advanced methodologies in support of practitioners across the compliance and enforcement chain.
Forensic tools for detection and investigation of waste and mercury crime
This activity aims to advance detection and investigation methodologies and tools, including the use of forensic analysis and new field methodologies for on-sight verification. With regards especially to mercury-added products and mercury bearing wastes, this activity will aim at answering the existing needs of customs officers in Europe and in CEE/Balkans and African countries.
On-site detection of mercury added products and mercury bearing wastes during inspections
The Strike project partners are currently developing a report about on-site detection of mercury added products and mercury bearing wastes during inspections. The objective of this report is to describe the development of methods for visual and analytical detection of mercury-added products and mercury bearing wastes in the field, combined with a safety guideline, to further assist compliance officers in their work
The report contains an overview with photos of mercury added products and mercury bearing wastes; options for the use of mobile field equipment to detect mercury during inspections, and a safety guideline.

Synergies with the WasteForce and OPFA Waste Projects
WasteForce Conference
The final conference of the WasteForce Project called Watch the Waste: countering waste crime: costs, tools and trends was organised online on the 7th of May. Partners presented the main outcomes of the project, including:
· A methodology to calculate the impact on the environment and human health of waste trafficking
· The waste crime prosecution guidance
· The use of forensics data analysis
· An assessment methodology to measure the impact of new policies on the global waste trade
· The Waste Crime Alerts
· The 4 Multi-agency training events and 8 webinars
The conference, attended by 144 representatives from 37 countries and representatives from Interpol, WCO, UNEP, AECAN, OLAF and the European Commission, also discussed the legacy and opportunities to build on the products and networks developed under the WasteForce project. The need for effective enforcement, operational coordination and more dissuasive penalties for waste crime offences were some of the shared statements.
Multiple partners of the Strike Project were involved in the conference and information about the activities of the Strike project was shared with the participants, including the Strategic Risk Analysis and upcoming trainings.
