SGS and UNITAR

SGS and UNITAR's collaboration

As part of the cooperation between SGS and UNITAR, UNITAR will conduct an initial Training Needs Assessment (TNA) in two priority countries in the Africa region that will be identified by SGS. The TNA will allow to identify the problems and needs related to the e-waste management infrastructure. The TNA will then serve as a basis to develop a structured UNITAR training programme to be endorsed and financed by SGS.

Training Needs = Desired Capability – Current Capability

The TNA is an effective  method to identify the gaps and needs related to training and capacity building regarding e-waste

management. The TNA aims at accurately identifying the present situation through target surveys, interview, observation, secondary data and/or training workshop. The gap between the present status and desired status may indicate problems that in turn can be translated into a training need.

SGS Renovo and the global e-waste challenge

In 2017, the world has produced 44.7 million tons of hazardous e-waste, with up to 70% of it ending up in landfills. The majority is dumped in developing countries with strained waste management systems, burdened budgets and little capacity to manage the increased flow.

The foundation of sustainable and liveable cities is the sound management of waste. However, this proves to be prohibitively expensive as it accounts between 20 to 50% of municipal budget for developing countries. That is where SGS Renovo™ comes in.

Offering a modern, unique and effective solution to governments willing to tackle the rising issue of e-waste management, SGS Renovo provides essential support to key aspects of a sustainable e-waste management program including support to recycling infrastructure.

The goal is to monitor and control the flow of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) entering the country with transparent data collection and implement EEE management best practices without impacting national budgets.
